“Boston’s most wanted. And least qualified.” Apple TV has revealed the official trailer for an action comedy called The Instigators, another amusing buddy movie about two guys who end up on the run around a city, much like Jon Watts’ film Wolfs – out later this year. Set in Boston, The Instigators follows two robbers who must go on the run with the help of one of their therapists after a theft doesn’t go as planned. Matt Damon and Casey Affleck co-star in this crime comedy as Rory and Cobby: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in chaos, pursued not only by police but also by backward bureaucrats & vengeful crime bosses. Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, The Instigators also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. One hell of cast! As for the rest of it, doesn’t seem so bad. Does it?

Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings in the city of Boston. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also by backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they all must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse. The Instigators is by the American filmmaker Doug Liman, of the films Swingers, Go, The Bourne Identity, Jumper, Mr & Mrs Smith, Fair Game, Edge of Tomorrow, The Wall, American Made, Chaos Walking, Locked Down, and the Road House remake most recently. The screenplay is written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck. It’s produced by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Kevin J. Walsh, Alison Winter. Apple debuts Liman’s The Instigators streaming on Apple TV+ starting on August 9th, 2024 late this summer. It will also open in select theaters for one-week starting on August 2nd before it’s available for streaming. Any good? Who wants to watch?
