“The best golfer isn’t the one with the fanciest clubs, it’s the one who can summon the will to keep swinging when things get tough.” An official trailer has arrived for an indie film titled The Long Game, a true story about a group of golfers in the 1950s who pushed back against American racism. This first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, but hasn’t been released anywhere until now. Based on the book titled “Mustang Miracle” by Humberto G. Garcia, directed by Cuban-American filmmaker Julio Quintana. In 1955, five young Mexican-American caddies, out of the love for the game, were determined to learn how to play, so they created their own golf course in the middle of the South Texas desert – in Del Rio. Experience the inspiring journey of young caddies who dared to dream beyond the fairways. The Long Game tells the true story of grit & boundless ambition that turned the golf world upside down. The film stars Jay Hernandez, Dennis Quaid, Cheech Marin, Julian Works, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Brett Cullen, with Oscar Nuñez, Richard Robichaux, and Paulina Chavez. A bit cheesy, but this actually looks pretty good. Have a look.

In 1956, JB Peña and his wife moved to the small town of Del Rio, Texas, partly for the job as a school superintendent, but mostly to fulfill JB’s dream of joining the prestigious, all-white Del Rio Country Club. So when JB is rejected on the basis of his skin color, he is devastated. His world soon collides with a group of young latino golf caddies who work at the country club, and JB is inspired by the handmade course the boys built in the country to teach themselves golf. With little experience & few resources, JB convinces the boys to start their own high school golf team, starting them all on a journey where they learn that it takes more than just golf skills to make history. The Long Game is directed by Cuban-American filmmaker Julio Quintana, director of the films The Vessel and Blue Miracle previously, plus a few other short films. The screenplay is written by Julio Quintana, Jennifer C. Stetson, and Paco Farias; adapted from the book titled “Mustang Miracle” by Humberto G. Garcia. Produced by Javier Chapa, Ben Howard, Dennis Quaid, Laura Quaid, Marla Quintana. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival a few years ago.
