“I don’t think anyone could have anticipated how many children would want this product.” Uh huh, sure. Netflix has debuted an official trailer for another tech business documentary series called Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul, arriving for streaming next month. Directed by R.J. Cutler (of the Belushi doc), this is produced by Amblin Television & TIME Studios. Big Vape tells the high-drama, rags-to-riches story of the controversial electronic cigarette company Juul which transformed from a scrappy Silicon Valley tech start-up run by two idealistic Stanford graduate students intent on making the world a better place into a multi-billion-dollar tobacco company that sparked an epidemic of youth addiction & lung disease. Perhaps not everyone has heard of Juul before, but they certainly made an impact (for worse) jumping on the vaping bandwagon. Another tale of greed and ignorance, with businessmen trying to make money without realizing the real harm they’re doing. How many more stories like this will be told before things change? Take a look.

Juul was the fastest-growing company in history. Now, they’re a cautionary tale. Based on the book Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul by TIME Health Correspondent Jamie Ducharme, and directed by R.J. Cutler (Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry; Belushi), this four-part doc-series unpacks twenty years of Silicon Valley innovation, influence, & insanity to explain the spectacular flameout of the vaping device that almost changed everything. Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul is a doc series directed by American producer / filmmaker R.J. Cutler, director of the doc films A Perfect Candidate, The September Issue, The World According to Dick Cheney, Belushi, and the music biopic Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry previously, as well as extensive TV work and the feature film If I Stay from 2014. It’s executive produced by Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television, Elise Pearlstein, Trevor Smith, and Lindsay Panell for This Machine, Ian Orefice and Rebecca Teitel for TIME Studios. Netflix will debut the Big Vape doc series streaming on Netflix starting October 11th, 2023 this fall. Stay away from Juul! Not worth it. Thoughts?
