New Trailer for 4K Re-Release of Andrei Tarkovsky’s ‘Nostalghia’ Film

“To me he is a God.” –Lars von Trier. Kino Lorber has revealed a new re-release trailer for Nostalghia, one of the last films Andrei Tarkovsky made in the 1980s just a few years before he passed away. This new 4K restoration of the Tarkovsky classic is set to play in limited theaters starting in February & March around the US. “Nostalghia is not so much a movie as a place to inhabit for two hours.” –J. Hoberman. A Russian poet and his interpreter travel to Italy researching the life of an 18th-century composer, and instead meet a ruminative madman who tells the poet how the world may be saved. Tarkovsky said at the time that, “my wish was simply to observe a Russian who comes to Italy and discovers unexpected emotions which regard him… the drama emerges precisely from this clash between this innocent vision of the world and the real conditions of life for a man who is away from his country.” It stars Oleg Yankovsky, Erland Josephson, and Domiziana Giordano. Andrei Tarkovsky explained that in Russian the word “nostalghia” conveys “the love for your homeland and the melancholy that arises from being far away.” This debilitating form of homesickness is embodied in the film by [the character of] Andrei (Oleg Yankovsky), a Russian intellectual doing research in Italy. He becomes obsessed with the Botticelli-like beauty of his translator Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano), as well as with the apocalyptic ramblings of the self-destructive wanderer Domenico (Erland Josephson). Written with frequent Michelangelo Antonioni collaborator Tonino Guerra (also of L’Avventura) and newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative, Nostalghia is a mystical & mysterious collision of East & West, shot with the tactile beauty that only Tarkovsky can provide. Nostalghia is directed by Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky – his 8th film at the time, just before going on to make Voyage in Time and The Sacrifice. The screenplay is by Andrei Tarkovsky & Tonino Guerra. This first premiered at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival and also played at the New York Film Festival, then opened in select US theaters in early 1984.
