“Don’t get involved in this, Mr. Caul.” Don’t get involved in what?! Who is after him?! Studiocanal UK has revealed a new re-release trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation, for its 50th anniversary this year. The film initially opened in 1974 and premiered at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival, meaning he is back again premiering his newest film (Megalopolis) at Cannes 2024 a full 50 years later. “To mark the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s (The Godfather, One From the Heart) seminal neo-noir thriller, The Conversation, we are is thrilled to announce a brand-new 4K restoration of the film to UK cinemas on July 5th.” This paranoia masterpiece stars Gene Hackman as sound surveillance expert Harry Caul, who hears something while taping a couple. A paranoid, secretive surveillance expert has a crisis of conscience when he suspects that the couple he is spying on will be murdered. The ensemble cast also includes John Cazale, Allen Garfield, Frederic Forrest, Cindy Williams, Michael Higgins, Elizabeth MacRae, Teri Garr, Harrison Ford, Mark Wheeler, and Robert Duvall. This is a real classic! Still makes you feel extra anxious (who’s listening?!) after watching. With a new poster by Laurent Durieux – seen below.

And here’s two old classic trailers to enjoy for Coppola’s The Conversation, also found on YouTube:
Sound surveillance expert Harry Caul (starring Gene Hackman) is hired to track a young couple, taping their conversation as they walk through San Francisco’s crowded Union Square. Knowing full well how technology can invade privacy, Harry obsessively keeps to himself, separating business from his personal life, even refusing to discuss what he does or where he lives with his girlfriend Amy. Harry’s work starts to trouble him, however, as he comes to believe that the conversation he pieced together reveals a plot by the mysterious corporate “Director” who hired him to murder the couple. After he allows himself to be seduced by a call girl who then steals the tapes, Harry is all the more convinced that a killing will occur and he can no longer separate his job from his conscience. The Conversation is written and directed by the acclaimed American producer / writer / filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, his sixth feature film at the time, made right after The Godfather (1972) and just before the sequel The Godfather Part II (also 1974) next. It’s also produced by Coppola and made by American Zoetrope / The Coppola Company. The film originally opened in the US in theaters in April 1974, before screening at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival in May. Studiocanal UK will re-release Coppola’s The Conversation in UK cinemas starting July 5th, 2024 before on VOD/BR.
