“I’ve given a lot to this country but sometimes I feel like I’ve failed.” Picturehouse has revealed an official trailer for an indie immigrants thriller from the US titled At the Gates, marking the feature directorial debut of up-and-coming filmmaker Augustus Meleo Bernstein. This first premiered last year at the 2022 Deauville Film Festival in France, and is opening in US cinemas this fall if anyone is interested in watching. At The Gates is a movie about A Salvadoran housekeeper and her teenage son begin to question whether they’re being protected or imprisoned after an affluent couple offers to hide them from immigration officers in their basement. As days go by under the same roof in this sprawling home, each family begins to question the other’s true intentions in this riveting and emotional thriller. Starring Miranda Otto, Noah Wyle, Ezekiel Pacheco, Vanessa Benavente, and Sadie Stanley. Reviews say it’s an “uncomfortable thriller” that does a good job of building up the tension. But where will it go? How will it play out? Watch & find out.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Augustus Meleo Bernstein’s At the Gates, direct from YouTube:
Ana Ibarra (Vanessa Benavente), a housekeeper from El Salvador, has been working for the Barris family for eight months when she first brings her teenage son Nico (Ezekiel Pacheco) to the home to help her. Told by the Barrises that their family’s home has been visited by Immigration & Customs Enforcement agents looking for the mother & son during a sweeping crackdown, the pair is grateful when Marianne (Miranda Otto) offers to let them stay in the house until the situation can be sorted out. Her attorney husband Peter (Noah Wyle) appears reluctant to have Ana & Nico stay and imposes a series of strict conditions: Don’t leave the house, don’t stand near windows, turn over all cell phones, stay out of his office and spend nights hidden away in a locked storage space in the basement. After several days without further visits from ICE, Nico begins to bristle under the restrictions. He begins to break the rules and wander through the house at night. Soon each family begins to question the other’s motivations in this riveting and emotional thriller.
At the Gates is both written and directed by American writer / filmmaker Augustus Meleo Bernstein, making his feature directorial debut after a few other short films previously.
