“You’re just never satisfied because you know, like, there’s someone else right next to you going harder.” Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Trilogy: New Wave, a surfing movie about three rising surf stars. Set for release in September on VOD and in theaters later this summer. More than a decade has passed since the original Trilogy (2007), a classic surf film directed by Taylor Steele, was released. Since then, surfing has transitioned from countercultural pastime to mainstream sport worldwide. Trilogy: New Wave examines this evolution with a new lens, offering an unexpected perspective of surfing’s present. Three elite surfers travel to eight remote destinations searching for pristine waves and an escape from the stress of competition. This film follows Ethan Ewing, Griffin Colapinto, & Seth Moniz as they balance their careers with a desire to rediscover the joy of surfing, free from contest scores. From pastime to mainstream sport, Trilogy: New Wave charts a fresh take on surfing’s present. This looks like it would pair well with the OG classic surf doc The Endless Summer – also about surfing all year. Let’s go hit some waves.

Directed by sports photographer / producer Andrew Mackenzie, Trilogy: New Wave stars Griffin Colapinto (currently ranked #1 in the World Surf League), Ethan Ewing (currently ranked #2 in WSL), and Seth Moniz on a dream quest across the globe for pristine waves in Indonesia, Peru, South Africa and Tahiti. As the pressures of head-to-head competition for a championship crown weigh heavy, the three put fierce rivalries aside and discover how the power of friendship can unlock even greater success in and out of the water. Trilogy: New Wave is directed by American photographer / surfer / producer Andrew Mackenzie, making his feature directorial debut with this project. Executive produced by Kyle Bullington, Jack Craymer, Davis Clark DiLillo, Pat Hall, Enich Harris, Michael B. Schwab, Evan Slater, Brian Spitz, and Taylor Steele. This hasn’t premiered at any film festivals yet or elsewhere, as far we know. Utopia will debut the Trilogy: New Wave doc in select US theaters + on VOD starting September 13th, 2024 coming soon.
