“Thinking back on it now, it feels like there’s two halves of my life.” Utopia has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled The Good Half, which first premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival. This is getting a quick theatrical debut in July (with Q&A screenings for two nights only) before hitting VOD later this summer. Nick Jonas, one third of the famous swanky boys known as the Jonas Brothers, stars as Renn Wheeland who returns home to Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. Once there, he forges new relationships while healing old ones (featuring a cast with Brittany Snow, David Arquette, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Walsh, and Elisabeth Shue), before confronting his problems and trying to face his grief. The festival also adds: “featuring grounded & moving performances by a fantastic ensemble cast, this tender family dramedy offers an honest and nuanced approach to grief, regret, and healing.” This seems sweet and charming, with some clever humor worked into the script about grief and loss. Worth a look if this sounds appealing to you.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Robert Schwartzman’s film The Good Half, direct from YouTube:
Nick Jonas stars as Renn, an emotionally distant writer who returns to his hometown of Cleveland for his beloved mother’s funeral, after having spent years successfully avoiding interactions with his high-strung sister (Brittany Snow), bumbling but well-meaning father (Matt Walsh), and untrustworthy step-father (David Arquette). In town, he forges a new relationship with a charming, energetic stranger (Alexandra Shipp) who pushes him to realize that he can’t avoid conflict forever — with his family or within himself. The Good Half is directed by American indie actor / producer / filmmaker Robert Schwartzman, director of the films Dreamland, The Unicorn, The Argument, and the doc film Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary previously. The screenplay is written by Brett Ryland. It’s produced by Russell Wayne Groves, Robert Schwartzman, and Brett Ryland. This initially premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival last year. Utopia will debut The Good Half in theaters nationwide with a two-day event featuring a Q&A on July 23rd & July 25th, 2024 this summer. It will then be available to view on VOD after that.
