“He was an advocate for ‘just to have fun.'” An official trailer has debuted for a documentary titled Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi, made independently by the Kinnane Bros. It’s getting at theatrical release coming up in July if anyone wants to hang with them and hear about the story of Sid. Water Brother follows East Coast legend Sid Abbruzzi as he faces the closure of his iconic surf & skate shop in Newport, Rhode Island (see Google Maps). Reflecting on his lifetime dedicated to core culture, this captures Sid’s passion and commitment to preserving the history. Featuring archival footage, elegant cinematography and personal interviews with culture giants like Tony Hawk, Shepard Fairey, Selema Masekela and more, this film takes viewers on a journey through the evolution of surfing and skating. As Sid approaches 73, the doc highlights the impact of the shop’s demolition on the community and serves as a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of surf culture. The documentary feature film Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story follows the life of surf and skate core legend and cultural icon Sid Abbruzzi, and his commitment to protecting the sports’ history and culture. A film by the Kinnane Brothers. Through a mix of never-before-seen archival film, large format cinematic footage, and personal interviews from culture giants like Tony Hawk, Shepard Fairey, Selema Masekela and more; we are taken on a journey through surfing and skating history – from 1960s Newport to Santa Cruz, Cocoa Beach, South Africa’s Jeffrey’s Bay, and beyond. As Sid approaches the age of 72, it captures the final days of his famous Water Brothers Surf & Skate shop as it is set to be demolished and the impact it had on the surf & skate community. The documentary emphasizes the importance of memory, personal history, and living in the moment, reminding us to cherish our past and also to preserve cultural heritage.
Water Brother: The Sid Abbruzzi Story is a documentary film co-directed by filmmaker brothers Charles Kinnane (director of The Human Experience, “Sound Guy” series, Home Team, Syndrome K) & Daniel Kinnane (director of Home Team), of The Kinnane Brothers, an independent film company founded by 8 brothers. Produced by Colin Moniz, William Kinnane, & Jeffrey Azize. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know.
