“Every word of Irish spoken is a bullet fired for Irish freedom.” 🇮🇪 Sony Pictures Classics just dropped the official US trailer for the rad, energetic hip hop musical film from Ireland called Kneecap. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year and received near universal acclaim (it ended up on my Top 10 Best of the Fest list). It’s dope! Based on the origin story of the riotous & ground-breaking Irish-language rap trio Kneecap, the film stars the band’s original members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí (also known as Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh) in their acting debuts alongside Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender, with Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds, Fionnuala Flaherty, and Josie Walker. Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”. Winner of the Next Audience Award at Sundance. This Irish film deserves to be a massive hit! Opening in theaters in the US starting August this summer – don’t miss it.

Intro via Sundance: “There are 80,000 native Irish speakers in Ireland. 6,000 live in the North of Ireland. Three of them became a rap group called Kneecap. This anarchic Belfast trio become unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement to save their mother tongue. Bursting forth from an often unpredictable and raucous post-Troubles Belfast, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh leap onto the screen to play themselves in this heightened & wildly entertaining tale of Kneecap’s origins, with Fassbender in tow as the charismatic father figure turned political martyr. Armed with a blend of English and native Irish verses and blazing, politically charged rhymes, Kneecap’s music takes us on a ketamine-fueled, rollicking trip to encounter the meaning of pure defiance.” Kneecap is directed by Irish filmmaker Rich Peppiatt, making his first narrative feature after the doc One Rogue Reporter previously, plus a few shorts & music videos. The screenplay is by Rich Peppiatt & Móglaí Bap & Mo Chara & DJ Próvai. Produced by Trevor Birney and Jack Tarling. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. WildCard opens Kneecap in UK cinemas on August 23rd, 2024, Irish cinemas August 8th and in the US on August 2nd.
