“But there is only so much height any wave can sustain, before it comes crashing down.” Sony Pictures Classics has revealed the official US trailer for The Outrun, which premiered at both the 2024 Sundance & Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year. It’s the exact same trailer as the UK trailer from before but with new quotes. This acclaimed film is based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir, the story of an alcoholic woman who returns to her homeland – the remote Orkney Islands located off the northern coast of Scotland at the very top of the UK. After living life on the edge in London, Rona attempts to come to terms with her past. She returns to the wild beauty of Orkney (where she grew up) hoping to heal. Starring Saoirse Ronan as Rona in one of her best performances yet. The Outrun is a searingly honest drama about addiction, survival and the power of nature to restore life and renew hope. This is one of my favorite films of 2024 so far (here’s my full review), it’ll likely remain on my Top 10 at the end. This also stars Saskia Reeves, Stephen Dillane, Lauren Lyle, Izuka Hoyle, & Paapa Essiedu. Don’t miss this film in theaters when it opens in the US in October.

After a decade away living in London, 29-year-old Rona (Saoirse Ronan) returns back home to the Orkney Islands, north of Scotland. Sober but lonely, she tries to suppress her memory of the events which set her on this journey of recovery. Slowly the beauty and lore of the land enters her inner world and – one day at a time – Rona finds hope and strength in herself among the heavy gales and the bracingly cold sea. The Outrun is directed by the acclaimed German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt, director of the films System Crasher and The Unforgivable previously, plus the doc Without This World and many other short films. The screenplay is written by Nora Fingscheidt & Amy Liptrot; from a screenstory written by Amy Liptrot & Nora Fingscheidt and Daisy Lewis. It’s adapted from Amy Liptrot’s memoir also titled “The Outrun“. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Studiocanal opens the film in UK cinemas on September 27th. SPC debuts The Outrun in select US theaters on October 4th, 2024.
