“It has a vending machine! I love this place!” Illumination + Universal have revealed the first official trailer for the next sequel in their never-ending Minions franchise – Despicable Me 4. Yep, they’re going back to the ol’ Gru storyline again, which wrapped up with Despicable Me 3 back in 2017. This sequel is set to open in July, the usual spot for these movies. In the first Despicable Me movie in seven years, Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem, with an introduction of another new family member – Gru Jr. They face a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (voiced by Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (voiced by Sofia Vergara), and the Gru family is forced to go on the run. The voice cast features Steve Carrell back as Gru, plus Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Madison Polan. With fresh new characters voiced by Joey King, Stephen Colbert, and Chloe Fineman, plus Pierre Coffin as the Minions and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom. This looks like the exact same goofy Gru fun as before – if ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
Here’s the first official trailer (+ poster) for Chris Renaud’s sequel Despicable Me 4, direct from YouTube:
Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1B worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls —Margo, Edith and Agnes — welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting his dad. They face a new nemesis with Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, as they’re forced to go on the run. Despicable Me 4 is directed by animation filmmaker / Minions co-creator Chris Renaud, director of Despicable Me, The Lorax, Despicable Me 2, and the two The Secret Life of Pets movies most recently. It’s co-directed by Patrick Delage. The screenplay is written by Mike White (School of Rock, “White Lotus”) and Ken Daurio. Produced by Illumination’s Christopher Meledandri, and Brett Hoffman. Made by Illumination Animation based in Santa Monica. Universal will debut Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 sequel in theaters everywhere starting on July 3rd, 2024 this summer movie season.
