“I’ve come home to join you on another journey…” Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for a Norwegian documentary film titled Songs of Earth, a slow cinema gorgeous work of art made by the doc filmmaker Margreth Olin. This premiered at CPH:DOX and IDFA and TIFF last year, and will be released in US cinemas in early 2024. A beautiful, meditative doc about the power of this planet. “Being connected to nature, what does it mean? Father knows and father shows. The director’s father is 84. We follow in his footsteps into the mountain home. Into nature’s smallest life and out to grand panoramas, where he grew up.” It’s set in a valley in Norway called Oldedalen (see Google Maps), where her family is from. All of the breathtaking shots of the landscape are mostly accompanied by sounds of nature transposed into melodies by the London Contemporary Orchestra. A sweeping natural spectacle rooted in a personal history. Reviews praise the film: “A remarkable, poetic meditation, Songs of Earth weaves the smallness of human lifespan into the grandness of the earth’s history, and does it all with unspeakable beauty.” This looks so beautiful…

Full introduction via IDFA: “Beneath the cool-blue glaciers, gushing waterfalls and crisp green deciduous trees, we hear the soft tick-tick of 84-year-old Jørgen’s hiking poles as he cautiously navigates the boulders he encounters on his route. His daughter, director Margreth Olin, films him over the course of a year as he guides them through Oldedalen, a spectacular valley in Norway which he knows like the back of his hand. Margreth left many years ago, but her parents and the generations before them have tended to stay put. They grew up, fell in love and raised families here. The occasional earthquakes and floods, and the resulting loss of loved ones, are all part of life in this capricious natural environment. As the elderly can be, her father is voluble when it comes to that sort of family tale, as well as trivia about the village and anecdotes from his own childhood. But he is quiet when he walks among the rocks and animals—and the drones.” Visit it here.
