“One can break the chains – even if they are made of iron, they can be broken.” Abramorama has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled She Rises Up, from acclaimed doc filmmaker Maureen Castle Tusty (also of The Singing Revolution previously). Set for release in limited US theaters starting late June this summer. She Rises Up reveals the explosive implications of women’s economic participation as we follow radically different women from Sri Lanka, Peru, and Senegal who are fighting to build businesses that create job opportunities for even more women, while also contributing to the reduction of poverty. With Abramorama orchestrating the theatrical release and ROCO Films activating screening hosts for the film in non-traditional spaces, like college campuses, non-profits, churches and NGOs, the film will open in NYC at LOOK Dine-In Cinemas followed by more cities across the US. Five-time Grammy winner Angelique Kidjo composed & recorded an original song for this film. An empowering story about real progress in the world.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Maureen Castle Tusty’s doc She Rises Up, direct from YouTube:
“She Rises Up focuses on the intersection of women and poverty and the power of work. The women and men we have met throughout the making of this film have inspired us beyond measure. Such stories from remote parts of the world rarely make the news, and it’s our commitment to give their experiences and insights light. We believe audiences will come to admire and love these women as much as we do.” –Filmmakers Maureen Castle Tusty & James Tusty
She Rises Up chronicles the remarkable journeys of three women working to lift their communities out of poverty through the local businesses they fight the odds to maintain. Gladys Yupanqui of Peru founded a mini-market and is looking to expand. Magatte Wade of Senegal is building a cosmetics company. Selyna Peiris of Sri Lanka is expanding the textile company founded by her mother. Gladys, Magatte & Selyna’s stories are each unique unto themselves. Yet a common theme illustrates the critical importance of local businesses to emerging economies. These three women must prevail over issues that are not faced by the multinational corporations that come in. Opening a business in many countries is easier for a large foreign corporation than for local entrepreneurs. She Rises Up reveals the role entrepreneurs and small businesses can play in women gaining financial independence, and ultimately in reducing poverty for all.
She Rises Up is directed by acclaimed doc filmmaker Maureen Castle Tusty, co-founder of Sky Films Inc with her husband James, and director of the other documentary films The Singing Revolution, Economic Freedom in Action: Changing Lives, Trailblazers: The New Zealand Story, Sweden: Lessons for America?, and Corporate Welfare: Where’s the Outrage? previously. It’s also executive produced by James Tusty. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Abramorama will release She Rises Up in select US theaters (starting in NYC) on June 21st, 2024 this summer. For more info, visit the official site.
