“It’s never simple to be a woman…” Picturehouse in the UK has revealed their official trailer for the indie film from France titled Rosalie, set for a UK debut in June this summer. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, playing at a few other festivals in Europe, though there’s no US release date confirmed yet. Have to be patient if you’re curious Set in France in 1870, inspired by a true story. Rosalie is a young woman with a secret… She was born with a face and body covered in hair. A genuine bearded lady. She’s kept her secret safe all her life, until Abel, an indebted bar owner, marries her for her dowry. Now, she no longer wishes to hide from him… or anyone else. Starring Nadia Tereszkiewicz as Rosalie and Benoît Magimel as Abel, plus Benjamin Biolay, Guillaume Gouix, and Gustave Kervern. A story of hope and radical self-acceptance, Rosalie is a beautiful and bold romance from director Stéphanie Di Giusto. This looks like a tender, touching tale of an unconventional woman who must grow beyond the hate from others.

France, 1870s. Rosalie (Nadia Tereszkiewicz) is a young woman unlike any other. She hides a secret: she was born with a face and body covered in hair. She’s concealed her peculiarity all her life to stay safe, shaving to fit in. Until Abel, an indebted bar owner unaware of her secret, marries Rosalie for her dowry. Will Abel be able to love Rosalie and see her as the woman she is, once he finds out the truth? Rosalie is directed by the French filmmaker Stéphanie Di Giusto, making her second feature film after The Dancer previously, plus a few other short films. The screenplay is co-written by Stéphanie Di Giusto & Sandrine Le Coustumer; based on a treatment by Sandrine Le Coustumer & Alexandra Echkenazi. It’s produced by Alain Attal. This initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Un Certain Regard section, and it just played at the 2024 Miami Film Festival. Picturehouse will debut Rosalie in UK + Ireland cinemas starting on June 7th, 2024 this summer. No US release date is confirmed – stay tuned. Anyone intrigued?
