Netflix has revealed a new featurette to celebrate the grand re-opening of the famous Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles (right in downtown Hollywood – here on Google Maps). In addition to the Paris Theater in NYC, this is now the second theater that Netflix owns. The Egyptian Theatre is an iconic, historic movie palace that first opened in 1922 and has hosted many big premieres over the decades. From 1998 to 2020, it was owned & run by American Cinematheque. Netflix will now manage programming Monday through Thursday and the American Cinematheque will run it from Friday through Sunday. They’re kicking things off with a series of classic screenings (full list here), as well as announcing that Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi movie Rebel Moon will be screening in 70mm in select cinemas around the world – including at the Egyptian this December. Ever since our first days, FirstShowing has been a purveyor of the theatrical experience. I’ve seen some iconic movies at the Egyptian, including Lawrence of Arabia (which they’re re-showing this fall) and it is indeed a spectacular cinema. Netflix has given it a complete refurbish and proper upgrade – a must visit.

Here’s the description from Netflix: “Experience a piece of Hollywood history as Netflix re-opens the doors to the Egyptian Theatre. Take an inside look at the restoration process that has been years in the making here. The tradition and glamor of this legendary movie palace has been restored to honor the past while also bringing it up-to-date with state-of-the-art features for an incredible cinematic experience. This December, audiences can experience an exclusive 70mm engagement of Zack Snyder’s new epic science-fantasy event, Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child Of Fire, or escape to another era with a classic like It’s a Wonderful Life.” The Egyptian Theatre re-opening is kicking off with a series of screenings hosted by Netflix. You can sign up for updates and access ticket sales information on the Egyptian Theater righthere and follow the theater on IG @egyptianla. You can also sign up to join the American Cinematheque or learn about public screenings here. Highly recommend visiting this landmark movie theater in Los Angeles whenever you have the chance.
