This is the kind of super strange, clever sci-fi cinema we can always use more of nowadays. Space Plug is a fascinating, weird, funny little short film presented in B&W by UK filmmaker Marcus Anthony Thomas. It was made as part of a Disney Imagine UK scheme in partnership with the NFTS in London. Now available online to watch if you’re curious – and it’s only 14 minutes long. Every sci-fi nerd needs to watch this just to see something super creative and original. “A baby human is raised in a stimulant free room that looks out into the vastness of space, and more specifically at a big white, blackhole that sucks in stars like a plughole. A Space Plug. With only fluid-filled beings providing them sustenance and company, the human grows to become increasingly restricted by their surroundings and so sets about looking for a way out. Searching for a life in the infinite beyond… in the Space Plug.” This is way more wacky and weird than expected, with the flabby alien things being especially insane. It’s about this kid having “everything that they need but nothing they want.” With Anthony J Abraham, Iniki Mariano, Benjamin Atori, and Michael Fianko. Enjoy.
Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this debuting online. Brief intro from YouTube: “A baby human growing up in a blank white room in the middle of space is completely devoid of stimulation and social interaction all except for a series of fluid-filled ‘beings’ that are birthed through the walls to provide vital sustenance.” Space Plug is written and directed by filmmaker Marcus Anthony Thomas based in the UK – you can view more of his work on his Vimeo page or visit his official website or follow him for updates on IG @marcusanthonythomas. Upon graduating from NFTS initially, Marcus was selected for a mentorship scheme with WarnerMedia where he shadowed the Showrunners & Directors on HBO’s series “House of the Dragon”. This short was made as a part of the Disney Imagine UK scheme – working with NFTS to create a short film with a £25,000 budget and the use of NFTS production resources. It’s produced by Jordi Morera. With cinematography by Sonja Huttunen, and music by Oliver Wegmüller. This short originally debuted in 2023. For more details, visit his website or SOTW. To discover more short films click here.
