“Call Me Micky” a documentary following Fort Lee, New Jersey native Micky Angelo Petrillo through his transition beginning at age 59, has been selected for four film festivals this September: the Newark International Film Festival (NIFF), September 10–13, the Susquehanna LGBTQ Film Festival, September 11–13, presented by Pride Festival of Central PA, the Fire Island Transgender Film Festival, September 11–12, and the 37th Annual Reel Pride LGBTQ Film Festival, September 18–20.
The film traces Petrillo’s decision, after decades of hiding, to begin living openly as himself — a journey the documentary frames through humor and community as much as hardship. It screened to a packed house in Jersey City on March 5, and has spent the months since in the festival submission process, including consideration by Frameline, Outfest, and Tribeca.
“It’s about still choosing joy,” Petrillo has said of the project. “Because at the end of the day, if we can’t laugh… what’s the point?”
That approach — candid, unpolished, and rooted in a specifically Jersey sense of humor — is what has carried the film from a single community screening to a four-festival run spanning New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and beyond in under six months. For Petrillo, each new festival is another audience meeting a story he spent most of his life not telling.
