Michael just hit a massive box office milestone nobody saw coming. The Michael Jackson biopic reached a major global benchmark as its theatrical run continues building momentum worldwide.
Michael crosses $700 million at worldwide box office
According to Box Office Mojo, Michael crossed $700 million at the worldwide box office after 24 days in theaters.
The Lionsgate release earned $282.8 million domestically and $421 million internationally, reaching $703.8 million globally. The film opened on April 24 and debuted with $97.2 million from 3,955 theaters. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the biographical drama chronicles Michael Jackson’s rise from the Jackson Five to global superstardom.
Meanwhile, Michael returned to the top spot during the May 15-17 weekend. The film earned $26.1 million in its fourth weekend, raising its domestic total to $282.8 million. Additionally, the worldwide haul positioned the biopic among Lionsgate’s biggest global releases. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire still holds the studio’s worldwide record with $864.9 million globally to date overall.
Furthermore, Michael regained first place domestically after leading on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The film also surpassed The Passion of the Christ at the same point in release. That title earned $19.4 million in its fourth weekend and reached $281 million domestically during the same stage.
Current tracking projects Michael could finish between $375 million and $400 million in North America. The biopic also continued drawing strong theater attendance across major international territories throughout its fourth weekend in release.
Furthermore, Michael maintained strong momentum despite competition from The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II, and Obsession. The production carried a reported $155 million budget and currently derives 59.8% of earnings from international markets.
The film also ranked first again on Sunday after earning $8.18 million domestically. Lionsgate distributed the PG-13 release with a runtime of two hours and seven minutes.
