Tom Cruise is refusing to back down on Digger despite the movie’s brutal critical reception. The film has earned a divisive 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Cruise has explained why he continues to stand behind the movie.
Hours after Digger’s initial reviews went public, Cruise joined director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and the cast at Los Angeles’ Academy Museum of Motion Pictures for an FYC event. The event was part of the studio’s awards-season campaign for the movie.
Discussing the movie’s craftsmanship, Cruise said, “This film is handmade. It’s that kind of investment. I always wanted to be an actor, and I wanted to have this opportunity. It’s a real privilege to be able to make this film. I want you to know that I’m out here for you all. People want real things and they want real experiences. … What we put our attention on, we give life. Just keep creating and let’s enjoy doing it.”
What else did Tom Cruise say about Digger?
While praising the movie, Cruise also discussed what he believes audiences want to see. Some early reviews have called the movie a “misfire” and a “shallow satire,” criticizing its approach to contemporary issues. However, the criticism has not appeared to affect Cruise, who appreciated working with the cast and crew of Digger.
Cruise revealed that he had trouble holding back laughter whenever he shared a scene with John Goodman. He also stated that Sandra Hüller was “an extraordinary actress.”
Apart from Cruise, who plays the title character, Digger Rockwell, the film’s cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.
Digger has yet to open to a wider audience, and it remains to be seen whether audiences respond more positively than critics have. The film hits theaters on October 2, 2026.
