Fans of Pennywise can expect even more terror when It: Welcome to Derry returns for its Season 2. The hit HBO horror series, which just had a major awards win, is shaping up to release something that surpasses its already chilling debut season, according to its creator.
Andy Muschietti gives update on It: Welcome to Derry Season 2
During a press conference at the 2026 Saturn Awards, It: Welcome to Derry co-creator and executive producer Andy Muschietti shared an encouraging update about It: Welcome to Derry Season 2. The series had just taken home the Saturn Award for Best Horror Television Series, beating out fellow nominees including The Last of Us and another Stephen King adaptation, The Institute.
When asked about what’s next for the Derry universe, Muschietti acknowledged the mounting anticipation surrounding the series. “We’re very proud that the expectations are high after the first season,” he told reporters at the event. “I think we’re going to deliver something that is greater” (via Screenrant).
The producer’s confidence comes at a pivotal moment for the prequel series. Despite the positive buzz and awards recognition, HBO has not yet officially renewed It: Welcome to Derry for a Season 2. However, the holdup doesn’t appear to be related to performance concerns.
In late January, HBO CEO Casey Bloys addressed the show’s status directly, dismissing any speculation about production troubles. According to Bloys, It: Welcome to Derry season 1 performed exceptionally well for the company, making a second installment an easy decision from a business standpoint. He noted that Andy Muschietti and his sister and producing partner, Barbara Muschietti, are actively developing story concepts, assuring fans that the project is “not in limbo.”
While an official renewal announcement remains pending, Muschietti and his creative team have previously mapped out an ambitious multi-season vision. Showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane have hinted at a three-season plan that would explore different cycles of Pennywise’s terror in Derry.
With critical acclaim and audience love behind it, It: Welcome to Derry season 2 appears poised to expand its horrifying mythology in a major way.
