Rockstar Games has officially confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 is on the way and revealed that the first trailer for the next installment in the franchise will arrive sometime in December.
“We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto,” the company said in a statement. “We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you.”
Though Rockstar didn’t share a specific date, it’s highly possible that the trailer could debut at The Game Awards. This year’s ceremony is slated for December 7th, and the awards show typically features new trailers and announcements for upcoming titles.
December also coincides with the 25th anniversary of Rockstar Games, which is also known for other franchises like Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne. “In 1998, Rockstar Games was founded on the idea that video games could come to be as essential to culture as any other form of entertainment, and we hope that we have created games you love in our efforts to be part of that evolution,” the video game studio added in its statement.
Thanks to its online multiplayer mode and modding community, Grand Theft Auto V remains one of the most popular video games even a decade after its release; Rockstar even gave it a fresh coat of paint for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S last year.
However, anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 is high, and Rockstar confirmed it had begun development on the game in February 2022. A few months later, Bloomberg reported that the game would star a playable woman character for the first time. Later that year, there appeared to be a setback in its development when gameplay footage leaked online, but Rockstar promised work would “continue as planned.”
