CBS Evening News underwent a huge rebrand in January 2025. The show moved from Washington, D.C., back to New York. The news show had a high-tech set with new graphics and new co-hosts. John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois were named co-anchors. But less than a year later, both popular news anchors are gone. Keep reading to find out what’s going on at CBS.
CBS Evening News: Popular Anchor Announces Stepping Down
John Dickerson made the shocking announcement in October that he was leaving CBS after 16 years. The decision came months after the anchor publicly spoke out against a merger between Paramount Global, which owns CBS, and Skydance Media. The merger went through in August. While he didn’t point to the merger as a reason for leaving, many fans think it played a part.

Now, in another shocking move, his co-anchor, Maurice DuBois, announced on social media that he’s done at CBS Evening News, too, effective almost immediately. “Moving On: December 18th is the day of my last broadcast at CBS News. It has been the Honor of a Lifetime. 21 years altogether, including my time at WCBS-TV in New York City,” he wrote in a social media post.
The news anchor continued, “What a privilege! To be welcomed into your homes night after night, delivering the news / meeting extraordinary people and telling their stories. I’ll leave filled with gratitude, cherished relationships and amazing memories.”
Fans Sad, Angry Over Changes
Maurice DuBois’s exit comes amid major shakeups at the channel after Bari Weiss was named editor-in-chief of CBS News following the Paramount Skydance merger. The news division has been gutted amid mass layoffs and resignations.
Fans took to the comments to share their shock at the announcement.
- “You and John deserve better than the “new” CBS. Godspeed and good luck!”
- “This is sad, I feel as though you and John were forced out!”
- “You and John are the ultimate journalists! I wish you all the best!”
- “CBS is going downhill fast”
- “You will be missed, but you deserve a home that appreciates your journalistic skills. Heartbreaking to see what is happening to CBS.”
- “Unbelievable, what’s CBS upper management doing, letting talented people go”
- “I am so saddened by this news. CBS is becoming a ghost yard of its former self. What a horrible business!”
- “What’s wrong with this network? They finally get it right and still manage to screw it all up!”
CBS hasn’t announced who will replace John Dickerson or Maurice DuBois. However, there are rumors that they’re looking for a solo anchor to take over.
The two popular co-anchors leaving CBS likely isn’t the last shocking change. It’s been reported that Gayle King is out at the morning news program after her contract expires in a few months.
