Project: Transcend NYC Brings New Depths and Voices to the Body Mapping Experience at LGBTQ Center Debut
NYC Artists Explored Identity, Gender, and Journey Through an Intensive 12 Week Body Mapping Project
Following twelve weeks of intense artistic introspection and expression, Project Transcend, the body mapping experience that highlights the personal journey of six artists from the transgender and gender nonconforming community, using diverse media, opens at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center in Manhattan on March 20th, 2026 from 6PM – 9PM and is part of The Center’s Day of Trans Visibility programming. It will run at The Center through May 31st. The project is supported by The Women’s Community Justice Association and by the donations of individuals who care about the arts and representation.
What is Body Mapping?
At its most simple iteration, body mapping is an artistic exercise where one’s entire body is traced out onto life-size rolls of paper. The artists are given space to create an expression of their own story in their own way.
Project: Transcend NYC elevates the body mapping experience into raw expressionism of the joys and trauma each artist faced in their own journeys as creatives. The prompts given to them are designed to encourage introspection and explore the truths of their personal experience and in doing so, highlight our collective humanity.
While the process can be challenging the results were six wholly individualized and beautiful pieces of art that do what art is supposed to do: expose truths in all their colors.
All photographs documenting the behind the scenes process of the artists were taken by Project: Transcend NYC photographer Kim Hernandez(they/them).
