The Pitt understands the assignment.
There’s a reason why fans and critics alike laud this series, and it has become something of a sensational pop culture phenomenon from its first episode.
Well before we got deep into The Pitt Season 1, it was evident that this series was simultaneously something different yet familiar.
We’re in an era where appointment TV is far and few between, and few series can manage the same Watercooler TV vibe of yesteryear.
But somehow, The Pitt has managed that, while also reminding us of why the weekly drop formula isn’t just this lost arm form but something that a streamer can pull off well and effectively.
If you want another sign that the people behind The Pitt know what they’re doing and should be the blueprint for blending the methodologies of pre-streaming television with this modern era, consider the fact that the series released its teaser trailer for the second season already.
We know the series is roughly halfway through filming the sophomore season already, which in itself seems like an anomaly in this current era.
Unfortunately, networks and streamers have conditioned us to begrudgingly accept that it takes two to two years for shortened seasons of shows to return, and that the best choice is for them to burn all the episodes off in one release, so conversations surrounding them can evaporate less than a month after they drop.
But The Pitt understands the grind. And maybe it’s because we have accomplished individuals like John Wells, Scott Gemmill, and Noah Wyle behind it.
It feels like a collaborative effort by people familiar with the business and how it works — who trust and know that some of the formulas from the past are still valid while also learning how to mesh those tactics with this social media era.
In many ways, The Pitt has brought back the golden era of audience-driven television. They don’t look down on viewers but rather treat them like fellow collaborators with a give-and-take relationship.
The series signed off with an incredible season finale back in May, and it doesn’t return with its full season again until January, but never once has the conversation about this series stopped.
It’s been ongoing, staying at the forefront of people’s minds and part of conversations since its debut. Its reach and audience have only expanded and increased with time, rather than decreased.
The Pitt is a conversation starter, proving that viewers can connect with a series and keep discussions flowing even when the content dries up.
But the smart thing about The Pitt is that the content never dries up. Months after the season signed off, we still get incredibly engrossing interviews with the many faces of The Pitt and those behind it.
The For Your Consideration Emmy campaign kept the show’s hype building rather than fading away into obscurity.
From little teases and snippets to sneak peeks of filming and engagement with fans, there’s no real space for The Pitt fever to really die down, but it’s also not overdone or too much.
And now, roughly four months after the finale, we already have our first peek at the new season. It’s a fantastic teaser that captures the essence of the show and what we love about it, features enough of our favorite characters, and even addresses one of the biggest plot points: Langdon returning to work after rehab.
We have enough in those 45 seconds to feast on for another two months, which is most likely when they’ll drop an extended teaser trailer if this one is any indication.
Robby is clocking in for a new shift on a new day (Independence Day, one of the busiest days of the year for ERs).
And Nurse Dana? She’s back, and there’s a sense of relief that, despite how understandably burnt out she was, she still can’t step away.
It’s the embodiment of a healer’s spirit, especially someone who is in the job for all the right reasons, despite what they endure along the way.
We catch glimpses of rockstar Santos, no less confident, but with a definite vibe that she’s more mature, and similarly, Whittaker, sporting a new ‘do and the stature of someone more settled into the role and less green.
It does not stop me from holding my breath when I see him with the paddles, however — and that applies to the other characters as well.
Javadi? She definitely seems a bit flustered, still, but the fact that she’s still around when she appeared to genuinely consider calling it quits is something to cling to.
McKay is still rocking those bangs and being badass. Garcia? She’s certainly still moving with that swagger. And nurse Jesse is a lovely sight to behold, stealing moments even when he’s not featured.
We still have earnest fan-favorite Mel, and Samira has that First Daughter quality, seemingly under Robbie’s wing a bit while still holding her own.
And of course, Langdon is returning after his hiatus. The prodigal son, indeed. The perfect tease of what’s to come.
It’s pure chaos, and heartbreak, and rewarding moments, and mess. And we have many new faces, one of them asking that key question: “Do you guys do this every day?”
“If we’re lucky,” Santos says. Because the grind doesn’t stop in the Emergency department, but despite everything, they still show up, show out, and save lives.
And we’re definitely lucky as viewers because The Pitt knows how to feed us all year round.
