The yellow brick road has always been a promise. Stay on it, keep walking, and it delivers you somewhere better than where you started. That is the arrangement L. Frank Baum made with readers in 1900, and it is most of why the image outlived a century of adaptation.
Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz invites you to follow it to Hell.
That is the line the filmmakers use to introduce the first teaser, released alongside the official poster, and it is a fair summary of what writer-director Elijah J. Alvarez appears to be building. The film is billed as a contemporary horror interpretation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the pitch is not that Oz is frightening now. The pitch is that Oz is where you end up when something inside you has already come apart.
The challenge is the curse
The official synopsis puts us on Halloween night, when a viral internet challenge unleashes Dorothy, the Wicked Witch and other nightmarish figures on an unsuspecting California town. The curse spreads. The line between myth and memory starts dissolving for a group of struggling college athletes. One student has to face her own trauma before it takes everyone around her down with it.
The latest press materials list Adrienne Tabag, Caia Bonner, Jordan Sklansky, Aziah King, Andrew Wang and Thomas Shan among the cast. Alvarez wrote and directed, and produces through his own Buddy Pictures.
The teaser makes the mechanism literal. A young man sits, ready to call the Wicked Witch to him, and he is doing it because the whole thing is a social-media challenge. That is a summoning ritual with a share button attached, and it is the smartest thing in the footage.
A viral challenge is the same machine as a folk curse with better distribution. The old rules were always about participation. Say the name three times into the mirror. Do not read the Latin out loud. The danger was never the entity, it was that somebody performed the ritual without understanding it, usually because a friend dared them and they did not want to look scared.
A trend does exactly that, except the performance is recorded, the recording is the point, and the reach is measured in millions rather than a schoolyard. Nobody has to believe in it for it to spread. They only have to film it.
That reading is mine rather than something Alvarez has stated. What he has said is more personal and lands in the same territory.
“My generation is fractured by the internet and still trying to find ourselves while life keeps stripping pieces away,” Alvarez said in comments provided with the film’s press materials. “We document everything, we chase feeling, and still we can’t stop the darkness from encroaching.”
The monster you do not get to kill
The most useful thing Alvarez has said about the film is also the least promotional.
“Horror is a powerful way to explore not just defeating the monster, but learning how to live with it,” he said.
That reframes everything around it. Slashers are built on a closing action, the final girl standing over the body, and the genre’s satisfaction depends on the threat being external enough to end. A monster you have to live with is a different proposition and a much harder one to stage.
He put the thesis more directly in the same materials.
“Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz is about grief-shaped identity, the ways evil enters through the fractures in our lives, and what happens when the thing haunting us is also the part of ourselves we refuse to face.”
If that holds, Dorothy and the Wicked Witch are not villains wearing new makeup. They are shapes that something already living in these characters has found to wear. Whether the film earns that is not a question a teaser can answer, and the materials sensibly decline to explain what the central student is running from.
Four genres, one first-time director
Alvarez is 22 and this is his feature debut. The independent production is described as blending psychological thriller, supernatural slasher, coming-of-age drama and science-fiction worldbuilding.
That is a lot of load-bearing wall for a first feature. Any one of those registers can carry a movie by itself, and horror is full of debuts that reached for three things and landed one. Ambition at this scale is not the same thing as achievement, and there is no honest way to judge which applies until people can see it.
The swing is real, though. Nobody stacks coming-of-age drama on a slasher on sci-fi worldbuilding by accident.
What the teaser shows, and what it does not
The strongest thing in the teaser is a decision that has not been made yet.
A young man is about to sing. He is going to perform the witch’s song and summon the Wicked Witch, and he is doing it because a trend told him to. The teaser is built around the moment before, which is the correct place to cut and an uncomfortable image on its own terms. Everyone watching knows what a challenge video looks like. Most of us have watched one being filmed.
Withholding whatever answers the song is the entire strategy. This is a premise teaser, not a highlight reel, and it is not selling gore or a body count.
Previously released character images, recirculated with the teaser campaign, fill in some of what the new footage leaves alone. The Wicked Witch of the West arrived with green makeup, glowing red eyes and a blood-smeared grin. The Tin Man was streaked with what read as metallic tears. The Scarecrow wore a decayed burlap mask over bloody teeth. Dorothy was in frame with them, looking on in horror rather than leading the charge.
That last detail is worth sitting with. In the imagery so far Dorothy is a witness as much as a threat, which leaves her allegiance open. The synopsis lists her among the things the challenge unleashes. The pictures keep her ambiguous.
The design logic is character-specific rather than generic. The Tin Man’s damage is metal, the Scarecrow’s is rot, and each figure decays according to what it was made from. That is a more considered instinct than putting everyone in the same blood.
Not toward home
Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz is currently in post-production and is targeting a fall 2026 premiere. That is a goal rather than a booked date, and no distributor or sales company has been publicly announced.
The original road went somewhere. It carried a girl through a strange country and returned her to a farmhouse in Kansas, and the reassurance of that structure is most of why the story became permanent.
Alvarez is pointing his road the other way. Not outward toward a wizard with answers, but inward, toward whatever these characters have spent their lives declining to look at. The curse arrives through a phone because that is the door everyone leaves open.
We document everything, as he puts it, and the darkness keeps encroaching anyway.
