Fightland Series Premiere Review: Duke Wins the Fight & Loses Everything…

Critic’s Rating: 4.5 / 5.0

4.5

Fightland wastes no time putting Maduka “Duke” Kilroy at the center of the action.

One minute, we are looking at the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip. Next, he is in the ring fighting for the heavyweight championship.

I found myself cringing and even jumping when some of those punches landed. The fight looks and sounds incredibly realistic, and it’s that visceral feeling that carries throughout the premiere.

The crowd, camera work, and sound effects pull you right into the ring. Nothing about the fight feels fake or staged.

That was all I needed to know about the series. From that moment on, I was hooked and ready to see what Fightland had to offer.

The hour gives us our first real insight into Kingsley Marshall early on. We see him and his family sitting ringside, and we quickly learn he is not someone to play with.

A reporter asks the wrong question and finds out the hard way that crossing Kingsley comes with consequences.

We also see how differently he treats his children. His daughter, Cece, gets his affection and respect, while Zeek gets insults.

Cece is clearly the favorite and the brains. She has the business sense her father respects, and she knows exactly how valuable she is to the family.

She also has a cutthroat side, and it’s clear that she is very much like her father. That automatically makes her one of the most interesting people to watch within the series.

Whereas with Zeek, he’s still trying to prove himself, and it’s obvious that Kingsley does not trust him or agree with his decisions.

The premiere also introduces us to Kingsley’s wife, Joy.

We learn that she’s having an affair with Duke. However, fortunately, Fightland does not paint her just as someone caught between two men. There’s substance underneath the surface.

It’s Joy’s affair with Duke that is the catalyst that sets everything into motion.

By the time the opening credits roll, roughly 15 minutes into the series, Duke has experienced the best and worst night of his life.

The series doesn’t waste much time. We meet the key players, and the hour already establishes their connections. There is no long, drawn-out backstory.

The setup gives us exactly what we need and keeps moving. With this many characters, that could have become confusing, but it never does.

The attack is where the premiere lands its first emotional punch.

Duke’s Biggest Win Comes With a Devastating Loss

Kingsley sends men to break Duke’s hand and end his boxing career, but Duke’s brother and corner man, Calvin, is killed trying to help him.

In one night, Duke experiences his biggest win and his biggest loss.

His response is brutal, but after watching his brother die in front of him, I understood the rage.

Then the police show up almost immediately. Naturally, the timing feels far too convenient.

That’s where we get into how Duke is convicted and spends eight years in prison.

What stands out is how Fightland succeeds in showing the weight of those years without overexplaining it.

Duke always suspected he was set up, and a fellow inmate confirms that Kingsley ordered the attack.

A picture of Calvin and articles about Kingsley’s growing empire pile up in his cell, making it clear Duke is grieving, watching, and waiting.

The Duke Returns

(Starz/Screenshot)

When Duke is released, he returns to London with almost nothing. His first stop is Kilroy’s gym, where he reunites with his best friend, Justin “Jay” Hall.

Jay is clearly happy to have him home. And my heart immediately goes out to him. Not only is Calvin dead, but Duke has been gone for eight years.

They were his only family, and you can feel how much having his best friend back means to him.

It’s that relationship that brings some heart to an episode filled with violence and crime.

(Courtesy of Starz)

Meanwhile, the welcome from Duke’s father, Gary “Gazzer” Kilroy, is much colder.

There is no hug. Nothing.

He gives Duke a room above the gym, which is the only real indicator that there is some love there, but the relationship is complicated.

Kilroy’s gym fits that part of the story perfectly and helps define these two different worlds.

Kilroy’s gym is gritty and outdated.

Whereas the Marshall gym could not look more different. It is modern, glamorous, and almost too polished to look like a place where anyone breaks a sweat.

(Courtesy of Starz)

I loved that contrast. One gym feels like struggle and hard work, while the other screams money, image, and power.

Where is Kingsley Marshall?

Kingsley has been missing for months by the time Duke returns.

It’s that mystery which gives Fightland another compelling layer. No one knows whether Kingsley is hiding, dead, or somewhere planning his next move.

But even when he’s absent on the screen, his presence looms over the episode, as everyone is still dealing with the aftermath of choices he made.

Duke does not wait for an invitation to return to Marshall Promotions. He tells a reporter he is coming back, forcing Zeek to confirm it publicly.

It’s a smart move on Duke’s part to make the Marshall family believe he is desperate, because being underestimated gives him an advantage.

Once he gets inside, we see how Zeek and Cece humiliate him with insults and menial jobs. But it’s evident that he’s putting up with it because revenge is his real motivation.

The siblings think Duke is broken, but the viewer clearly knows it’s strategic.

Duke is not one who is content to wait for something to happen. He’s impatient, which leads to him making a bold move against their drug operation, and it shows just how quickly revenge fuels him to take dangerous risks.

(Courtesy of Starz)

By the end of the episode, it is clear Duke is not as in control as he thinks. His plan is already attracting the wrong kind of attention, and the consequences are starting to catch up with him.

The premiere packs in a lot of action. The soundtrack is fire and adds energy throughout the episode.

Like Power and BMF, Fightland carries the stamp of a G-Unit production. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson performs the theme song, and the drug world is central to the story.

Boxing and the London setting give Fightland its own identity and keep it from feeling like a copy.

(Courtesy of Starz)

I did need closed captioning for a few of the accents, but that did not take away from the story. Once I settled into the episode, it was easy to follow.

Fightland Season 1 Episode 1 is a solid start and definitely worth watching for anyone looking for a gritty drama with plenty of action.

Now, I have to figure out if Duke is playing this smart or if revenge will make him reckless.

Over to you, Fightland Fanatics. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Fightland streams all-new episodes Fridays on Starz.
