James Gunn has shared an intriguing update about Clayface’s future in the DCU. The horror film premiered at the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles on October 13, ahead of its wide theatrical release.
During a Cinemex red-carpet interview, Gunn was asked how the movie fits into the wider DCU. The filmmaker discussed the DCU’s approach to telling stories across different genres and confirmed that the shapeshifting Batman villain’s new movie will not be his last appearance.
“I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points,” the DC Studios co-CEO said. “And yeah, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Clayface. And I can’t wait for you guys to see what we do with him.”
James Gunn did not reveal where the character would appear next. Although the movie is part of the DCU, it tells a standalone story about Clayface. The character first appeared in the DCU animated series, Creature Commandos. Gunn previously confirmed that the animated and the upcoming live-action versions are the same character.
What is the DCU Clayface horror movie about?
Directed by James Watkins, the horror film centers on Matt Hagen, a rising movie star whose face is disfigured by a local gang. He then agrees to an experimental treatment that transforms him into a terrifying, shapeshifting monster.
Tom Rhys Harries leads the cast alongside Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, David Dencik, and Eddie Marsan. As for the creative team, Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay, while Flanagan also receives a story credit. James Gunn produces the R-rated film alongside Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, and Peter Safran.
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, Clayface opens in theaters on October 23, 2026.
