Commentator Megyn Kelly has sparked controversy for her criticism of Australian actress Milly Alcock and her Supergirl film. She called Alcock “loathsome,” seemingly comparing her to Rachel Zegler without mentioning the latter’s name.
Speaking on her show, Kelly argued that the film’s disappointing box office performance is due to what she believes is “forced upon us girl boss era.” She also claimed that the film failed because viewers are not interested in stories that she believes push female empowerment in an artificial way. “It’s not authentic. It’s not organic. We’re no longer buying it,” she said.
Kelly also made several personal remarks about Alcock, saying that she found the actress to be “very weird looking” in House of the Dragon. She further argued that Alcock had “created problems for herself” through previous interviews.
In the interview Kelly refers to, Alcock had said, “It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on. We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
The commentator dismissed Alcock’s comments, noting that the actress had appeared in a franchise known for explicit content. She then criticized the actress’s response to online backlash over her remarks about sexism. Alcock had said that she found it hilarious that many of the criticisms were from anonymous accounts and joked that they had profile descriptions like “Dad of four, Christian.”
Kelly then reminded that Supergirl opened with $38 million domestically, which is far below the expected $50 million. She noted that the film received a poor rating across multiple review aggregator sites.
Another point on which Kelly disagreed was Alcock’s praise for Supergirl not centering on a romantic relationship. The 26-year-old had appreciated that the film focused on her character’s “resilience” rather than romance. She added that she was honored that it connected with the LGBTQ community.
“So, you can’t center around a love relationship because that would be offensive and obviously disempowering,” Kelly remarked. “If you are in a love relationship with a man, as a woman, it’s disempowering to your superhero narrative. F that.”
“Virtually every woman on earth who’s straight would love to connect with a man, form a love relationship, and be buoyed up by it, and not diminished, which is a Hollywood, weird, woke message,” the commentator concluded.
