Grant Gustin has reacted to the possibility of returning as The Flash in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The actor brought this up while addressing calls for him to reprise the role of Barry Allen.
The 36-year-old star discussed the idea during an appearance on the Awkward Puppets Show, also known as The Diego Show. When asked about returning as The Flash under Gunn, Gustin said he would do so if Gunn approached him. Acknowledging the ongoing demand for his comeback, he said, “It feels like a lot of people do [want that too]”.
The comments come after years of questions about whether Gustin could move from the Arrowverse into the DCU. He played Barry Allen throughout The CW’s The Flash, which ended its nine-season run in 2023.
What has James Gunn said about Grant Gustin returning as The Flash?
James Gunn has previously addressed whether Grant Gustin could join the DCU as The Flash, offering different comments on several occasions.
In March 2024, Gunn responded to a fan asking him to cast Gustin as a DCU hero. He wrote, “Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project. But of course I’d love to work with him at some point.”
Gunn later responded to a January 2026 fan post featuring Gustin as Barry Allen with the caption, “This gotta happen.” The post called for Grant to return, and Gunn replied, “It happened on TV for 9 seasons.”
More recently, a fan asked Gunn about a rumor claiming Gustin could return as a comic book variant of The Flash. Gunn laughed and responded, “Please define ‘decent rumor’”
None of those responses confirms Gustin’s casting in the DCU. DC Studios has also not announced Gustin’s return as Barry Allen.
