His body became grotesquely deformed, and he spent most of his life trapped and imprisoned. The character served as one of Hal Jordan’s most iconic and recurring antagonists across decades of stories.

HBO’s Lanterns episode 4 takes a sharply different approach to the character. The show introduces a man named Hector Hammond who founded Atlas Inc., a company linked to a satellite weapon. However, the series quickly subverts comic fans’ expectations with a significant twist. His real name is not Hector Hammond at all but rather Hector Gutierrez, and he works for the Manhunter. He appears as an ordinary person with no superpowers and a normal-sized head.

In the comics, Hammond gained his abilities after exposure to a meteorite fragment found in Abin Sur’s crashed spacecraft. This caused his brain to grow massively, granting him the power to read and control minds. The mutation also left him physically immobilized, unable to move or speak on his own. He became one of Green Lantern’s most formidable enemies through sheer psychic force.

The Lanterns version strips away every signature element of the comic book character. The show used the name as an Easter egg for fans, but the character carries none of Hammond’s established traits. The fact that Hal Jordan showed no recognition of the name suggests this version of the DCU never featured the real Hammond.

Using the name for a throwaway moment means a proper version of Hammond later may not carry any weight. Hammond’s comic origins do involve alien-adjacent threats, so a faithful adaptation remains possible in future DCU projects.
