Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd shared an iconic on-screen partnership in the Back to the Future franchise. However, the actors’ real-life friendship did not begin during the first film. Despite their strong chemistry as Marty McFly and Doc Brown, they mostly kept to themselves between takes. One of them recently opened up about why they did not become friends until after working on the original film.
In his memoir, In My Own Time, Lloyd looked back at his experience working with Fox on the 1985 movie. He recalled that although they had great chemistry on screen, they largely kept to themselves between takes. Their age difference and Fox’s demanding schedule also limited their interaction.
Lloyd explained, “We were separated by a generation in age.” He added that Fox was “busy doing essentially two jobs at once,” as he was filming Back to the Future while continuing his work on the television series Family Ties.
Lloyd also acknowledged the pressure Fox faced when he joined the film after production had already begun. The rest of the cast and crew had already spent several weeks filming before Fox joined, leaving him little time to settle into the role. Lloyd shared, “Now he was expected to come in quickly and help save the day. It must have been a very heavy burden for him.”
What else did Christopher Lloyd say about his friendship with Michael J. Fox?
Although the actors worked closely together on the first film, their friendship developed over time. Lloyd revealed that the two sequels gave them more time to get to know each other outside their on-screen partnership.
The actor recalled that their relationship changed as they continued working together on the franchise. He explained that it took the two sequels for them to become genuine friends. Lloyd shared, “It would take two more Back to the Future movies before Michael and I truly got to know each other and become friends.” He added, “But it would come.”
The actors eventually developed a lasting friendship that continued beyond the trilogy. Their connection has also remained visible through public reunions and continued appreciation for the franchise that brought their characters together in the first place.
