Derek Hough is a six-time Dancing With The Stars champion and Emmy-winning choreographer who now paints the rather dark brush of his childhood and journey step toward true mastery—real mastery being in stillness, not movement—with the Finding Mastery podcast. The episode with Hough is going viral for all the right reasons, with people rushing into the comments section with emotional outpouring.

Host Dr. Michael Jervet sat down and chatted with Hough, making it seem very slick and really going beyond just crisis steps. The 38-year-old dancer stated that he had suffered from night terrors before he turned eight but related it to his Mormon upbringing: “I was excited to be baptized because I was excited to wash away all these things that had happened to me as a young boy.” Heavy stuff indeed, and you rarely hear such honesty from someone who grew up, for the better part, in front of the limelight-and-all-splashing-orchestral.

But here’s the kicker: Derek Hough went on to reveal his endless search for success and explained how he had associated achievement with self-worth. “I equated all that with love,” he said. “In order for me to feel love or to feel worthy of love, I had to succeed.” These kind of truths hit home, especially coming from a person who has won most of what can be won in dance.

There came the real gut punch: Hough recalled a time when he had to quit dancing altogether. No tours. No rehearsals. Just stillness. “Being still was awakening,” he tells us. “Going from 1,000 miles an hour, being on tour in front of 400,000 people with my beautiful wife—we’d just been married for three months—to sitting in a hospital where the doctor told me she might not survive,” he recalled. “That contrast between the highs of performance and the crashing lows of a real-life crisis changed me. No award, no competition, no achievement could compare with the moment when she wrote her own name, and I knew that it was her.”

The fans in the comments were flabbergasted following that line of thought. “Wowwwww. I must hear this podcast,” wrote one, tagging it with dance emojis to show the urgency of the message. The reply said: “Done! Details in your inbox.” It is clearly one of those episodes that have largely impacted the lives in a span of days.

His journey is far from just dance—it’s about identity, about healing, about what happens when you come face to face with those parts of yourself that just can’t fit into a choreographed routine. For a person who made his career on movement, the hardest lesson he ever had to learn came through standing still. If that’s not mastery, what is?
