An ominous warning was passed on to Putin from former President Donald Trump. The stranger-than-fiction message went on to cryptic lengths without specifying anything concerning what circumstance could constitute “bad things” for Russia as U.S.-Russia relations swelled over Ukraine.

“The really bad things that would have happened to Russia if not for me, and by really bad I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!” Trump lamented in a social media term posted widely. Immediate reactions prompted with strong emotions came from across the political aisle, forcing both foes and supporters to try and interpret what Trump meant.
Just about the hour that Trump commented, a set of developments played out in the Russia-Ukraine war: the assassination attempt on Putin by Ukraine and the missile strikes against Kyiv carried out by the Russians as installation strikes. Whatever else can be said, any perceived escalation between the United States and Russia is far too dangerous at a time when diplomatic channels appear to be running cold.
