Then, on Thursday, a hiker made the grim discovery in the McGaffey Ridge area — rough, isolated land that had reportedly already been searched during earlier efforts. Authorities also confirmed that a handgun was found near the remains. Officials, however, are stressing that the cause and manner of death are still undetermined, and no official conclusions have been made about what happened out there.
