Every TV show goes all out for its pilot episode because that’s what sells it to interested parties.
Line of Fire Season 1 Episode 1 was fast-paced, quick-witted, and intriguing.
But an excellent series premiere doesn’t mean that the succeeding episodes will carry the same quality.
After Line of Fire Season 1 Episode 2, the cracks begin to show, and you don’t want them showing this early.
The series doesn’t suddenly collapse under the weight of its own structure, but as we focus on the story, some of my concerns begin to materialize.
Professional Responsibility Versus Family Drama
The episode picks up after the revelation about Logan’s murder, and the family rallies around Claire, some more than others.
I understand that Claire thrives when she has a mystery to solve, but if there were time to bench the character, that would be now.
Who in their right mind allows a grieving woman to return to duty? Her supervisor needs to talk to their supervisor because that’s not the right call.
In this case, I would side with Jane because the rational thing is for Claire to take leave.
The world is always on fire, and when she returns, there will be more murders to solve.
The case they’re working on is even tenser because of the constant arguing, which could have been easily avoided.
Meanwhile, the Hollingsworth family drama spills into the Secret Service as Micah tries to hide his illicit relationship with the president’s daughter.
This creates another soapy plotline that I’m also not sure how to feel about.
I understand that Line of Fire is a family drama, but do we need to ignore professional rules to keep the fantasy alive?
In Micah’s case, Mike should take action against him too.

Being in a romantic relationship with your protectee is just bad for business. It is easy to lose objectivity and get distracted by petty personal issues.
There’s one way this thing ends, and it’s not a happy outcome for Micah.
But based on Mike’s reaction after his son spotted that threat to the president, he is also not being objective.
Maybe he’s right that Micah’s approach is the new way to do it. But the cost of finding out can be catastrophic.
The Forgotten Hollingsworth
Elsewhere, there is another Hollingsworth, and I don’t like how the show is treating him, especially if I’m right about him.
Russ has been presented as the glue that tries to hold the family together.
He’s the one who reminds them that they’re family first, not coworkers.
When his sister is grieving, he’s the one to suggest comforts to ease her burden.
But that doesn’t hide the fact that he feels disconnected from this show’s format.
While everyone else gets some action in the field, we only catch glimpses of Russ in his storage-closet cum workspace.
Based on the writing, I’m confident that Russ is the show’s queer character.
Tyler Posey has been cast as Russ’ “close friend” from the Marines — do we need more confirmation?
In 2026, stories about queer experiences still matter, but we don’t want queer characters who exist as tokens.
Characters who are lost in the background only to reappear when the show needs to make a point about queerness.
They need to learn how to keep Russ in the narrative organically or get him out of that closet, no pun.
The hour also touches on the Jack mystery, and the results are mixed.
Through some really bad expository dialogue between Mike and Jane, we learn that they knew Jack was alive and had gone undercover.
To do what? No one knows, but it was important enough to warrant lying to the children that he had died.
I don’t think any mission is important enough to warrant such an elaborate, abusive lie.
I could be wrong, but the explanation better not be lacking.
Detective Wallace uncovers the truth about Logan, and it’s not shocking that he was CIA.
The real question now is what he wanted with Claire and why Jack killed him.
Gut Check
“A Bigger Picture” still strikes a decent balance between family drama, procedural investigation, and the main arc, but the seams are becoming more obvious.
Some dialogue needed work, and Russ desperately needs to be better integrated into the story.
Intrusive Thoughts
- I was hoping for another intricate family scene, but I guess Christmas comes once a year.
- Imagine getting a rare opportunity with a beautiful girl, but you decide to steal her innerwear to please men. American frat culture is really stupid.
- Did Wallace need to hear the typing sounds to understand that she was being played? That lady was giving too many details for something so casual.
- Do the writers think that acknowledging that Russ is invisible in this family absolves them of making him invisible in the show?
