FBI Season 8 Episode 22’s Finale Threatened OA… And We Almost Fell for It

Critic’s Rating: 4.7 / 5.0

4.7

Whew. Thank goodness OA is okay.

After his near miss with his new boss, he appeared forced to choose between his morals and his job after a traumatic confrontation.

The series revealed what was really going on just before the credits rolled, making for one hell of a cliffhanger.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

FBI Season 8 Episode 22 Revolved Around Toxic Secrets

From the first minutes, I knew this story would be better than average because Isobel was pissed about not having the security clearance to understand what the team was dealing with.

The idea of a novel bioweapon that could make people fatally ill and bring the city to its knees was compelling enough without this additional wrinkle, but the secrecy made things almost impossible.

Isobel was right that leaving her to fly blind was going to be a problem.

There was no way that the NY Field Office could recover the stolen pathogen and protect all of New York City without understanding the basics.

Things just got worse when Anna showed up on FBI Season 8 Episode 22.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS )

I’ve forgotten exactly what the previous issue was with Anna. ut the last time she worked with the team on FBI Season 8, she proved untrustworthy.

I think she did something else unethical, though I can’t remember what, so if anyone else knows, please enlighten me.

Anyway, the NY Field Office had plenty of reason to distrust her, so what went down this time shouldn’t have been as much of a surprise as it was.

Still, I didn’t expect Anna’s team to turn into armed robbers who shot at Maggie to get their way. At the time, it felt like unnecessary, contrived drama.

FBI Season 8 Episode 22 was the season finale, after all, so I thought that Maggie was put in danger just to create additional excitement in an already tense situation.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

I didn’t appreciate that because this scene was already dragging on endlessly with a long gun battle. Those are my least favorite kinds of scenes.

Plus, Maggie has been in danger one too many times, so I didn’t want her to be in yet another near-death situation.

The aftermath of that was even worse.

I’ve never been a fan of ADIC Green, especially not after the way he treated OA before.

It didn’t help that he started the conversation by insisting that OA and Maggie forget that the bus full of passengers they were trying to save ever existed.

There was no way that OA would ever accept that, and I was surprised that Isobel did.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS )

In retrospect, I should have realized that something was fishy about the whole thing, although I’m still somewhat confused.

Obviously, Isobel and OA had planned this whole ruse of OA getting fired since he called her once the undercover op was underway.

So he had to make everyone, including Maggie, believe he’d really been discharged from service.

But was ADIC Green in on it? Logically, he had to have been — otherwise, when this is over, how is OA going to be able to return?

Were you surprised by the final twist?

The fight between OA and the ADIC in the office seemed completely legitimate, though.

After all, this was the same guy who sent OA on a ridiculous assignment to get rid of him and almost punished him for getting the evidence they needed without going through the chain of command properly.

Plus, I loved OA telling Green that he was a disgrace to the bureau. Green certainly was acting like one, so, in a way, I hate for all of that to have been part of the ruse.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

Either Way, FBI Sets Up Fantastic Drama For The Fall

I prefer this ending to last year’s decision to make it seem as if Isobel had died.

Despite all the hype, I knew she would survive, so that cliffhanger simply irritated me. But this one opens new story possibilities.

For one thing, OA is playing a high-stakes game here. Anna is dangerous, corrupt, and allows her team to commit felonies in pursuit of their goal.

OA was right.

Her father’s tragedy doesn’t excuse what she did, especially not threatening Maggie in order to stop Maggie and OA from saving a bus full of people.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)

Her logic that the bus passengers would be sacrificed for the greater good because she could save more people once more treatment options were available was so cold and heartless, too.

So OA needs to take her down, but he also needs to be careful.

The bigger question for me is how this will affect his relationship with Maggie. She believes that he was fired and is heartbroken and angry about it.

Once all is revealed, she’ll know intellectually that OA had no choice — he couldn’t reveal his undercover op to anybody, not even his partner and best friend.

Still, emotionally, Maggie may feel betrayed, especially if she’s led to believe that OA turned traitor because of what the FBI did to him.

(Bennett Raglin/CBS)
